[ She'd been planning to leave today, anyway, but it was supposed to be an optimistic departure, with promises to kick butt and stay safe and a few eyerolls here and there because what are you, my mom? It wasn't supposed to be in a fit of choking tears, with two new Pokémon on her belt that don't even belong to her.
She dries her eyes on her sleeve for a third or fourth time and grits her teeth. Haku-bro's ball rattles again. He knows she's upset, somehow. As much as a big dragon hug would be nice, she wants to save him for tonight, when she'll need to camp on the water between here and Fuchsia City.
So in lieu of a big dragon hug, she crouches down and picks up the little Axew that woke her up this morning. He fusses, thrashes, then goes still as she climbs onto Red-bro's back. The extra few pounds don't trouble Red at all. He runs a few thundering steps and launches himself into the air, whipping Miyuki's hair out of her face and stinging her eyes.
Today was supposed to be a good day. She tightens her grip on both dragons fiercely. It's Nero's fault, of course. What kind of jerkface just up and leaves without saying goodbye? The kind Miyuki hates, that's what. First Thief-bro, now Metal-bro. (It occurs to her, fleetingly, that she should lump her brother and Sakura in with these two, too, but they're far less deserving of her wrath. She dismisses the thought outright.)
It's frightening, how much bigger and colder the world gets when just one person goes away. Before she knew Nero was gone, she was looking forward to camping on the water. Now the ocean seems terrifyingly lonely. Nevermind that she's been traveling alone for months.
(And she doesn't want to be anymore. The realization comes with a new rush of tears, because she doesn't want to travel with someone who could disappear tomorrow, either. But what choice does she have? Alone now, or alone later. Some choice that is.)
As they clear the docks south of Vermilion, Miyuki decides she doesn't care if she never sees Nero again.
That's a whole lot easier than missing him. ]

Lacking any way of remedying the situation, though, going out of your way to be miserable seems somewhat counterproductive.

Ah. So you'd rather a life of isolation simply because if you don't make any more friends, then at least they can't leave you again.

That's a sentiment I can understand, I suppose.
